With over 95% of its population following Islam, the Arab world represents one of the least reached areas of the globe. Today’s technology provides us with an unprecedented opportunity to reach and disciple a significant number of these people. Across the Arab world mounting waves of change are breaking upon the lives of some 270 million individuals. These waves are fed by population growth, the increase of access to information through new technology, frustration over the perceived place of Arabs in the international scene and economic pressure. This has resulted in an identity crisis among Muslim young people, and because of the generation gap that separates them from their parents, they are facing this alone. We need to invest in new ways of using the internet to interact with those who are disenchanted with Islam and looking for answers.
God is opening the door. Over the last few years we have seen a significant number of seekers – more than ever before – respond to the gospel. Each month, more than 25,000 individuals from the Arab world seek information about Christianity from AWM’s Arabic-language websites. We regularly receive messages from those who want to know what it means to follow Christ.
Maarifa is the embodiment of AWM Media’s new strategic initiative to reach today’s digital generation of Arab youth through new media. Building upon 50 years of experience in using radio, television and the internet, as well as effectively engaging seekers through Bible correspondence courses, AWM Media is now re-engineering in order to be more effective in reaching 16 to 35-year-old Muslim young people – the so-called digital generation of today’s Arab world.
Maarifa is a cost effective means of using interactive new media to proclaim the gospel and engage Muslim seekers. Plans include developing an online mentoring programme for Muslim background believers who want to grow in their walk with the Lord.
There are an estimated 35 million internet users and 75 million mobile phone subscribers throughout the 19 nations of the Arab world. This digital generation of Arab youth is searching for answers outside the rigid confines of Islam. They want to hear a new message. They want an exchange of ideas.
AWM Media recognises that it is imperative that we position ourselves to effectively engage this emerging generation of young people. This can be achieved by developing an integrated, strategic approach for using the internet alongside other new media technologies.
