Projects - Flowers in the Desert
See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the desert and streams in the wasteland. Isaiah 43:19 (NIV)
Flowers in the Desert is both a strategic and much needed 90-minute Gulf Arabic-language feature film that depicts the incredible true stories of three Muslims from the Arabian Peninsula who came to faith in Jesus Christ.
The story opens with a burst of action at night in the desert: There are people in cars. Who are they? Where do they come from? Where are they going? Through flashbacks the viewers are drawn into the lives of the occupants. A turning point is reached and sets the stage for a dramatic conclusion.
Based on real-life testimonies, it portrays with gritty realism the struggles, aspirations and hopes of three believers in the heartland of Islam. Some are from a secular, Westernised background – others have had a traditional or tribal upbringing, but all share one experience: an encounter with Jesus Christ that has changed their lives forever.
The Arab Muslim world holds strongly to a foundational belief that Muslims from the land of the ‘holy’ places, Mecca and Medina, do not become Christians or remain faithful to Christ in the long run. Few testimonies of people coming to faith in places like the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia are actually known. And yet, we find many people interested in the gospel. Every month more than 1,500 individuals from the Arabian Peninsula seek information about Christianity from our Arabic-language websites Maarifa and Shabiba.
For Muslims of the Arabian Peninsula this will be a very visible and first-time encounter with the reality that there are believers in Christ in their region, and that despite pressures or persecution from their families, society and state, many do persevere and choose to endure hardships because they love their families, their country and the call of Christ on their lives.
The aim of Flowers in the Desert is to:
- Demonstrate that there are believers in Christ in the Arabian Peninsula who, despite pressure or persecution, persevere and choose to endure hardships by remaining there
- Encourage acceptance, freedom to change and curiosity to explore true Christianity
- Communicate that being a disciple of Jesus is a journey of transformation to becoming Christ-like while discovering God’s grace and sovereignty, despite one’s failures, shortcomings and human weakness
- Demonstrate that leaving Islam to be a follower of Christ in the Arabian Peninsula does not mean becoming a traitor, immoral person, or turning to a Western religion or culture
- Communicate God’s sovereignty: He is in control, reaching out with the gospel through the lives of his children, even to their enemies and persecutors
- Persuade Western audiences (both secular and Christian) that Muslims from this region do choose to follow Christ, that they suffer for their faith, and that God changes the hearts of people through faith in Christ
- Highlight and raise awareness (particularly of secular audiences) of the human rights of converts, and augment prayer and support to brothers and sisters in Christ in this part of the world
